Ono Komachi is depicted slumped over by the water. Wearing a gorgeous kimono, Komachi’s face is striking with her slanted eyes, red lips, and slightly blushed skin. Komachi is drawn with soft but firm lines and has a strong presence.
However, Komachi’s expression seems to be tinged with melancholy. Perhaps she is pensive as she gazes at her reflection in the water.
It is said that in her later years, Komachi left the court and lived a simple life. The image of Komachi standing in the field as shown in this work may suggest such circumstances.

Yamaguchi Soken(1759-1818) was a painter active in Kyoto. He studied under Maruyama Okyo and excelled at portraying beautiful women.
Shinpo Sosho (1764-1851), who wrote an inscription of praise for this work, was a priest of the Rinzai sect and served as the 434th abbot of Daitokuji Temple.
