On a boat floating in the center of the screen, a man is casting a fishing line. Is this fisherman a hermit who lives a life of seclusion away from the mundane world?
This hanging scroll is based on “Solitary Angler on a Wintry River” (Important Cultural Property) by Ma Yuan, which is in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum. “Solitary Angler on a Wintry River” is part of Ashikaga Yoshimasa’s collection of Higashiyama Gomotsu (Higashiyama Imperial Property), and has been highly prized since the Muromachi period (1336-1573) as a masterpiece from the Song dynasty of China.
This work is a replica, so to speak, and was probably produced for influential people to keep the masterpiece close at hand and appreciate it. In this work, Naganobu’s arrangement can be seen in the lower right corner of the screen, and willows and rocks have been newly painted.
When we look closer at the painting, we can see the contrast between the bold brushwork depicting the figures’ clothing and the delicacy of the facial expressions. The water surface is also superbly rendered, as if the boat is swaying with the gentle waves. The figures, the boat, and the trees are all painted in fine detail, indicating that the work was created with great care.
Kano Naganobu (1775-1828) was the eighth head of the Kano family in Kobikicho, and served the shogunate for two generations, Ieharu and Ienari. From the signature, we know that this work was produced during the Hogen period, that is, from 1802 to 1816.
