This painting depicts plovers playing by the water under a full moon. Although the strokes of the plover are calm, they give the impression of dynamic flight in the sky. The expression of the water currents illuminated by the moonlight is also eye-catching. In order to represent the white reflection of the water current, a very delicate gradation is applied to the ink color.
It is an atmospheric work that beautifully depicts a quiet night.
Nakano Kigyoku (unknown date of birth and death) was the son of Nakano Kimei (1834-1892), a disciple of Suzuki Kiitsu (1796-1858), and studied under his father Kimei. He is known for his work as a copyist of Sotatsu and Korin maki-e.
