Jurojin is seated with his eyes downcast, deep in thought. His beard and bridge of the nose are softly drawn in pale ink, giving a gentle impression. The background is lightly colored, but not uniformly, and the exquisite shading creates a three-dimensional effect. The brush strokes on the face are gentle, while the lines on the robe are drawn in dark black ink with strong and weak strokes.
The artist effectively uses both light and dark black ink, and thin and thick lines, to achieve a balance between stillness and movement in this work.
Kusumi Morikage(dates of birth and death unknown) is a painter of the Kano school active in the Edo period. He studied under Kano Tan’yu and was known as one of the Four Heavenly Kings of the Tanyu school. He is highly regarded for his creative style.
