It depicts a high warrior on horseback, his retinue, and a lone man confronting them. A barefooted man in a gray robe is kneeling on the ground and appears to be about to cut a white cloth with his sword. Beside him, a green-robed follower is scolding him vehemently. Although the content of the legend is unknown, a river with a large bridge flows meaningfully behind the people depicted in this work.
All the characters’ expressions are vividly depicted. The light colors and soft brush strokes are characteristic of Morikage, and the entire work is elegant and cohesive.
Kusumi Morikage was a painter of the Kano school active in the early Edo period. He was called one of the Four Heavenly Kings under Kano Tanyu (1602-1674), but was later excommunicated, and developed his own style of painting. He is known for works such as the national treasure “Cooling Off”(Tokyo National Museum collection).
