The man on the left of the center of the screen, facing us and raising his left hand, is Zhuge Liang Kongming. Kongming is facing the two men, but it is not clear what this scene represents.
The faces of the figures are rendered with light brush strokes, each part of which shows Morikage’s distinctive features. The painting develops from the pine tree in the foreground to the figures, the house in the background, and the steep mountain in the distance, skillfully expressing the depth of space.
Kusumi Morikage was a painter of the Kano school active in the early Edo period. He was called one of the Four Heavenly Kings under Kano Tan’yu (1602-1674), but was later excommunicated, and developed his own style of painting. He is known for works such as the national treasure “Cooling off” (Noryozu screens) (Tokyo National Museum collection).
