Three puppies are playing together in a friendly manner. The round, colonized outlines and dull eyes skillfully express the loveliness of the newborn puppies.
The delicate fur depicts the fluffy softness and warmth of the black puppies.
The white of the puppy’s eyes is a characteristic feature of Okyo’s paintings, which expresses the direction of the puppy’s gaze and a variety of emotions. The puppy on the right gazes enviously at two neighboring puppies.
Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) is famous as the founder of the Maruyama School. Initially trained in the Kano school, he later studied a variety of techniques, including Western perspective and Chinese sketch painting, and combined realism with traditional Japanese decorative styles.
