Shu zhandao is a steep mountain road connecting Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces in China. It has been known as a difficult place in China since ancient times, and is also a motif that has been painted as a traditional painting subject. In Japan, however, literati painters painted many pictures of the Shu zhandao as a blue-green landscapes that included a longing for China. The inscription on the painting indicates that it is a reproduction of a painting by Zhao Chli-li, a painter of the Sung dynasty.
A winding plank road weaves its way through the dynamic composition of forested mountains. From the mountainside to the foot of the mountains, people and horses are depicted in various places. A group of people unloading their belongings and taking a rest, and another group of people arriving at the foot of the mountain in formation…… The contrast between the magnificent nature and the small human beings is magnificent. The artist’s delicate work is evident in the careful depiction of each person and each branch and leaf.
Painted in 1834, when Kokin was 30 years old, this work clearly shows the fresh talent of the young artist. Kokin left many excellent works during his lifetime, and this work is one of the best examples of his painting career.
