A man in armor is depicted. The man is speaking to the viewer and is identified as “Sun Wu” from the inscription at the top of the painting.
Sun Wu was a military commander in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Period of China, and the author of the famous military treatise “Sun Tzu”. Although he was a military commander, his calm and intelligent face shows his character as an advocate of “victory without fighting”.
The artist’s high technical skill can be felt in this work, which has been painted with meticulous attention to detail. In addition to vivid red and green pigments, gold is used in abundance, creating a very gorgeous finish.
Kano Okinobu (? – 1787) is known as the son of the third head of the Yamashita Kano family, Shunsho Yoshinobu (1730-1797). Okinobu died before taking over the reigns of his family. This work is extremely valuable because few of Okinobu’s works have survived.
The admirer, Seki Qinei (1733-1800), was a Confucian scholar and calligrapher of the Tsuchiura Clan. He is known to have interacted with the painter Tani Buncho.
