A beautiful woman is seated in front of a plectrum. The facial expression is very detailed, with the hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes drawn one by one in black lines. The outlines of the face and nose have a reddish hue, which, in combination with the red lips and skin tone, gives the painting an elegant atmosphere.
The painter’s skill is also fully demonstrated in the kimono’s pattern. The half collar is decorated with pale white chrysanthemum and water chestnut patterns. The dragon on the obi and the delicate dewdrops on the hem of the kimono are all delicately depicted. Another interesting aspect of this work is the shading in the Western painting style on the hairpin and the cloth under the repellent.

This work is formerly owned by the Manno Museum of Art. It is included in the 40th illustration of the “Ukiyoe Taikan in seven volumes” (Kodansha, Ltd.).

Yamaguchi Soken (1759-1818) was a painter active in Kyoto. He studied under Maruyama Okyo and was highly regarded among his students. He excelled at painting beautiful women and left many examples of his work.
