It depicts two cranes and their chicks. If you look closely at the parent birds, their bodies are overlapping, but their necks are sticking out in different directions and their legs seem to be intermingled. It looks like a trompe l’oeil painting, but this is proof that Shuki was well versed in the Nampin school.
The influence of Nampin school can be seen in the crane’s expression and the vitality of its fur. You can almost hear the powerful chirping of the baby birds in this work.
Okamoto Shuki(1807-1862) was a painter who specialized in flower-and-bird paintings, including peacock paintings. He is said to have studied under Onishi Keisai (1773-1829), a painter in the service of the Okuhira clan, and then under Watanabe Kazan (1793-1841), and is counted among the “Kazan Jutetsu”.
