It depicts cherry blossoms that radiate a fragrant beauty. The word “azure cherry” refers to the prunus serrulata.
The petals, painted with gofun (a type of powdered white powder), appear pure white at first glance, but there is a light crimson tint at the tips.
It can be seen that the artist carefully observed the actual sato zakura and tried to reproduce its characteristics.
By removing the color from the center of the petals, the artist was able to create a thin, soft texture that is transparent in the sunlight. The veins of the leaves are drawn in parabolic lines, expressing the rounded shape of the leaves in three dimensions.
The overall palette is light, and the work conveys the freshness and freshness of the prunus serrulata.

Hirose Kain (date of birth and death unknown) was a painter active in Kyoto in the late Edo period. He first studied under the Kano school, but later under Mikuma Katen, and like his master, excelled at cherry blossom painting. He also excelled in waka poetry and literature. His best-known works include “Kain Oka cho”.
