This painting skillfully depicts the quiet atmosphere of spring dawn with a witty and unconstrained brush style learned from the Shijo School.
mLooking at a plum tree, white buds are blooming, and a small bird is resting on the tip of a broom propped up on a branch. If you made the slightest sound, the bird would be startled and fly away. We gulped and gazed at it quietly.
The sun is rising in the far eastern sky, foretelling the arrival of a peaceful spring day.
“Shungo(春暁)” is a seasonal term that refers to the time from ‘akatsuki’ , a dim pre-dawn period in spring, to ‘akebono’ , when the sky begins to turn white.
Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891) was a lacquer artist and painter born in Edo.He learned maki-e from Koma Kansai from his childhood, and further studied under Suzuki Nanrei and Okamoto Toyohiko to master the painting techniques of the Shijo School. He not only contributed to the modernization of lacquer crafts, but also showed great talent in painting.
The signature of this work indicates that it was painted in 1883 (Meiji 16), when Zeshin was 76 years old.
