This work depicts the Wind God carrying a large windbag and the Thunder God beating a drum. Although the wind god and thunder god are well-known works by Sotatsu Tawaraya, the light colors and delicate brushwork of this work have a different appeal from those of Sotatsu’s work.
Gito’s originality can be seen in the familiar face of the wind god and the thunder god facing sideways. The clouds and winds painted in ink are also magnificent. Another interesting feature is that the clouds are drawn in a continuous pattern on the left and right sides of the painting.
Shibata Gito (1780-1819), a painter from Bizen Province, moved to Kyoto at the age of 15 and joined the Shijo School of Wu Chun, where he distinguished himself at a young age. He was praised for the exquisiteness of his brushwork, which was often referred to as “Gito for figures,” along with “Keibun for flowers and birds,” and Toyohiko for landscapes.”
Ohara Baiha(1775-1833) was a Confucian scholar and a member of the Bingo Okayama clan. A great-grandson of Daijoken (1637-1712), he was also an accomplished poet, calligrapher, and painter. He is known for his interactions with Suga Chazan and Rai Sanyo.
