This work creates a fantastic pictorial space with a group of butterflies flying fleetingly and prettily. The artist of this work is Mori Ippo (1798-1871), a painter active in Osaka in the late Edo period.
The butterflies flitting up and down are depicted from various angles, showing the painter’s sure artistic skills.
Although a total of 13 butterflies are depicted in this work, not one of them is the same species. Swallowtail butterflies, white butterflies, and blue swallowtail butterflies…… are all carefully depicted. The detailed depictions, almost like an illustrated book, reveal Kazuho’s interest in natural history.
This is a work that must be seen up close and personal.
