The mother monkey gently embraces her young, who bares its teeth in an attempt to catch a bee. The meticulously rendered fur, of course, is a highlight, but equally remarkable is the skillful depiction of differing textures—from the firm, elastic soles of the feet to the soft skin around the mouth.
Note the depiction of the eyes. The mother monkey’s gaze fixed on the bee is thoughtful, conveying a philosophical depth. Expressing profound spirituality with a single ink dot—this is the very essence of “Sarugaki-Sosen.”
