This lovely work depicts a large white elephant and two sparrows.
The elephant’s eyes are gentle as he gazes at the sparrows at his feet, depicting his gentle temperament. The outline of the elephant is drawn in soft lines using light ink. The very light ink is used to shade the details, effectively creating a three-dimensional effect.
The sparrows are drawn in a generous and lively manner, as is typical of the Shijo School.
Yokoyama Seiki (1792-1864) was a Shijo School painter who studied under Matsumura Keibun (1779-1843). He was so highly regarded for his ability that he is known as one of the “Four Famous Painters of the Heian area” in the late Edo period. He is known to have worked as an official painter for Prince Seireninson chonyudo.
