This work depicts an anecdote related to Minamotono Yoshie (1039-1106), a military commander known as “Hachimantaro,” after the Ishimizu Hachiman Shrine, the place of his first robes.

At the end of the Heian period, civil strife among the Kiyohara family, the rulers of Oshu, led to the outbreak of the Gosannen Battle.

During this battle, the elite of the Kiyohara army, who were waiting to intercept Yoshie, were hiding in Nishinuma (present-day Yokote City, Akita Prefecture). As Yoshie and his party were passing by Nishinuma, the line of geese flying overhead suddenly became disorganized and scattered in all directions. Seeing this, Yoshie immediately sensed the presence of the fugitives and returned fire with bows and arrows, successfully defeating the fugitives.
This “Wild Goose Rampage” was a standard theme for paintings of the Gosannen Battle.

The colorful autumn leaves and the stream flowing in the far left show the ornamentation typical of the Rimpa school. The delicate details of Yoshie’s costume and his brave expression as he gazes ahead are also highlights of the painting.
