Against a background of rising sun, Otafuku rides a crane and smiles. The main attraction of this work is Kyosai’s brushwork. The brush strokes are generally very fast, yet they accurately depict Otafuku’s robe and the wings of the cranes. The fan Otafuku holds and the crane’s head and legs are delicately rendered. The white satin used for the paper are decorated with pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms. Both the paper and the mounting cloth are in excellent condition.
Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889) was a painter active from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. After studying under Utagawa Kuniyoshi, he studied under Maemura Towa and Kano Dohaku of the Kano School.
At the National Industrial Exhibition of 1881, “Koki Kan-a” was awarded the second prize for outstanding technique. He pioneered a unique style of painting that combined the Kano school with the ukiyoe style, and has been highly acclaimed to this day. This work is valuable in that it was painted in 1874.
