It depicts Ushiwakamaru (Yoshitsune) soaring high and light.
In the lower right corner of the painting, we can see a parapet decorated with giboshi, indicating that this is the Gojo Bridge. Ushiwakamaru is gazing downward, but nothing is depicted beyond his gaze, but Benkei must be there.
Ushiwakamaru, who was said to be a handsome boy, has a sharp expression, but his face is still somewhat young. Ushiwakamaru’s robe and armor flutter in the air, skillfully depicting his light movements.
Kano Osanobu (1796-1846) was the ninth head of the Kano family in Kobikicho. He served the Shogun for two generations, Ienari and Ieyoshi, and is known for his numerous works, including wedding arrangements for princesses.
This work is thought to have been produced between 1819, when he was appointed Hogen, and 1834, when he became Hoin.
