The willow tree is firmly rooted and stretches its branches upward with supple strength. The artist skillfully expresses the delicate movement of the branches and leaves swaying in the wind with his unwavering brush strokes. The plum tree is dotted with white blossoms, reminding us of the early spring.

Willow trees have often been depicted in paintings as a motif of good fortune because of their strong vitality. Plum blossoms, which endure cold weather, were also favored by literati as a symbol of noble spirituality.
The life force of the plants and trees that have survived the cold winter and are waiting patiently for spring to come strikes the viewer’s heart.

The inscription indicates that this work is a reproduction of “Plum and Willow” by Ma Lin. Ma Lin was the son of Ma Yuan (1160-1225), a representative painter of the Southern Song dynasty, who himself served Ningzong and Rizong as a court painter.
This work shows one aspect of the Kano school’s enthusiastic study of Chinese painting.

Kano Tan’en Morizane(1805-1853) was the eighth generation of the Kajibashi Kano family, which began with Kano Tan’yu and went by the name Morizane. He participated in the creation of the barrier paintings of Edo Castle’s Honmaru and Nishinomaru, and was appointed Hogen in Tempo 15 (1844).
