It depicts Zhong Kui on a tiger and a baby tiger confronting each other. Zhong Kui seems startled by the sudden leap of the tiger.
While the entire painting is in light colors, the use of dark ink on Zhong Kui’s robe is striking. The thick, rhythmic lines used to depict the way the robe flutters around the figure beautifully capture the moment when Shoki suddenly turned his head.
The tiger cubs jumping around are very lovable and lively. The combination of the strong and sturdy Zhong Kui and the adorable little tiger makes us smile.
Kano Naganobu(1775-1828) was the eighth head of the Kano family in Kobikicho, and served the Shogun for two generations, Ieharu and Ienari. He created a style of painting that incorporated the techniques of the Nagasaki School and Nanpin School, as well as Yamato-e, and established the golden age of the Kobikicho Kano School. The signature on this work indicates that it was painted after he was appointed hōin.
