Mt.Fuji and a rising dragon are depicted with a skillful brush-and-ink technique.Mt.Fuji and a dragon have been favored since the Edo period (1603-1867) as an auspicious painting theme.

The rushing current swirling beneath the painting is now transforming into clouds, and a dragon emerges from the dark clouds. The dragon soars through the air, cutting sharply through the atmosphere, soaring toward the distant Mt.Fuji.The contrast between the stillness of Mt.Fuji in light ink and the movement of the dragon in dark ink creates a dramatic effect.

The Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art has in its collection a painting of the same style as this one, “Mt. Fuji and a Rising Dragon”(1852) by Kano Eigaku, which is thought to have been produced at a similar time to this work.

“Fuji”is pronounced as “不時” (to encounter unexpected calamities) and dragon(read as “tatsu” in Japanese) is pronunced as “断つ”(to cut off)so the combination of Mt. Fuji and dragons has been believed to ward off calamities.

Kano Eigaku(1790-1867) is the ninth head of the Kyoto Kano family. While striving to revive the Kyoto Kano tradition, he also flexibly adopted the expressions of the Shijo School, Nanga, and other schools, forming his own unique style of painting.
