Gosekku refers to the five days of the year: Jinjitsu(January 7),Joshi (March 3), Tango (May 5), Tanabata (July 7), and Chou-you (September 9). During the Edo period (1603-1867), they became important ceremonial days for the shogunate. Depicted here are offerings and foods related to each of these festivals.
The “Jinjitsu” scene depicts a pine tree with a pine-tree, a basket of seven herbs and a bush warbler tied to it, while the “Joshi” scene depicts a bird-shaped sake cup suggesting the poetic game “Kyokusui Banquet” . For Tanabata, a red-and-white thread and needle on a leaf of Kaji, wishing for the improvement of sewing; and for Chou-you, a gumi-bukuro on a folding screen. All of them are very beautifully drawn.
There is a record that it was exhibited at a bidding event for the collection of Onoe Kikugoro held at the Tobi Club in 1924. It is thought to be from the former collection of Kikugoro VI (1885-1949).
Kano Eigaku (1790-1867) was the ninth head of the Kyoto Kano family. He studied the styles of Sanraku and Sansetsu, and also adopted the style of Yamato-e.
He studied the Yamato-e style and revived the Kano family in Kyoto. This work also shows the results of his study of Yamato-e. In recent years, exhibitions focusing on him have been.
