This is a rare work depicting a bonfire on Mt. Daimonji. The subject matter is unique to the artist, who was active in Kyoto. The fine brushstrokes represent the trees in the mountain. The mountains in front and behind the Mt. Daimonji are painted in white to express the texture of the mountains’ surface. The vermilion color of the “大” character has shades of gray, skillfully depicting the appearance of a blazing fire. The very light sumi ink used in the upper part of the painting expresses the dimness of a summer evening, and is a work of great artistic skill.
Kano Eigaku(1790-1867) was the ninth head of the Kano family in Kyoto. He studied the techniques of Sanraku and Sansetsu and introduced the Yamato-e painting method to revive the Kano family in Kyoto. In recent years, exhibitions focusing on him have been held, and he is a painter who has attracted much attention.
