It depicts peonies, the flower of wealth, and a peacock, a symbol of prosperity of offspring. These are standard subjects, but it is somewhat rare to see a depiction of a pair of peacocks as well as their chicks.
The use of high-grade pigments gives this work its wonderful overall coloring. The blue of the peacocks is intense, but the peonies are no less gorgeous. The artist’s individuality can be seen in the color combination of the peonies. The various expressions of peonies are strongly reminiscent of the Kyo Kano tradition.
Kano Eigaku(1790-1867) was the ninth head of the Kyo Kano family. He studied the techniques of Sanraku and Sansetsu and introduced Yamato-e painting techniques to revive the Kano family in Kyoto.
In recent years, exhibitions focusing on him have been held, and he has attracted a great deal of attention. He is said to have adopted the painting style of the Shijo School, and this work is a notable example.
