It depicts three monkeys climbing a tree. The monkey at the top is poking a beehive with a tree branch. The monkey below him is sitting on the trunk and scratching his buttocks. He is very impressive with his smiling face, as if scratching his buttocks feels good. The monkey at the bottom is climbing up the tree trunk.
The reddish color of the monkeys’ faces and the way they are shaded are very realistic. In addition, while the monkeys’ bodies are entirely painted with hair, the shading of the colors gives them a three-dimensional effect. The expressions on the monkeys’ faces are like those of human beings, making this work a heartwarming one.
Kano Eigaku (1790-1867) was the ninth head of the Kyoto Kano family. He studied the painting styles of Sanraku and Sansetsu, and also adopted the style of Yamato-e to revive the Kano family in Kyoto.
This work also shows the results of his study of Yamato-e. In recent years, exhibitions focusing on him have been held, and he has been the focus of much attention.
