Chikugensai Kazumaru was a late Edo period shogun retainer and Shintoist, known as a high disciple of Yokoyama Maruzo (Yokoyama Marumitsu), the founder of 淘宮術(Tokyu technique).
This is a very realistic portrait, especially surprising in that each eyelash is individually drawn. The wrinkles around the mouth, the hollows of the eyelids, the temples, and the hollows of the throat are all painted in relatively dark colors, creating a three-dimensional effect. The hands are folded as if to make a sign, and here again, even the joints of the fingers are accurately depicted. The artist’s keen powers of observation and attention to detail can be glimpsed in this work.
Kano Ryoshin Shoitsu (1848-1919) studied under Shosen-in Tadanobu (1823-1879) of the Kano family in Kobikicho, and worked at the Exposition Bureau and the Ministry of Education. He was active in the Meiji period with his proven ability, winning awards at the National Painting Exhibitions in 1882 and 1884.
