This work is a portrait of Yokoyama Marumitsu (1780-1854), a samurai of the late Edo period and the founder of a spiritual discipline called Taogu-jutsu. On a strip of paper at the top of the painting is a poem in Marumitsu’s own hand. Marumitsu’s expression is that of a man in the middle of a moral instruction, staring straight ahead and opening his mouth in a small gesture. Combined with the carefully applied shading, this is a very lively portrait.
Kano Ryoshin Shoitsu(1848-1919) was the 12th head of the Negishi Ogyomatsu Kano family. He studied under Kano Shosen-in Tadanobu(1823-1879) of the Kano family in Kobikicho.
He worked for the Ministry of Education and the Bureau of Expositions after the Meiji Restoration, and was active in exhibiting his works at the National Painting Exhibitions in 1882 and 1884, where he received awards.
There are some insect bite marks on the paper and the front cover, but the rest of the painting is in very good condition.
