Under a cherry tree in full bloom, a man in Heian costume holds his hand on a branch and gazes at the blossoms. His face is classic, but there is something gentle in his eyes as he gazes at the cherry blossoms. The love for flowers is the same today as it has always been. The child behind him collecting petals on a fan is also very lovely. The faces of the figures and the patterns on their robes are very delicate and graceful. The work shows the ability of Osanobu, a painter of the Kano school who was also skilled in Yamato-e.
Kano Seisen-in Osanobu (1796-1846) was the ninth head of the Kano family in Kobikicho. He served the Shogun for two generations, Ienari and Ieyoshi, and is known for his numerous works, including wedding arrangements for princesses.
This work is thought to have been produced between 1819, when he was appointed Hogen, and 1834, when he became Hoin.
