The gorgeous Kyoho Hina dolls are depicted in all their splendor. Both the male and female dolls are characterized by their long slit eyes and thin white hands, reflecting the dolls of this period. Vivid colors are used for the male and female hina dolls’ costumes, and gold mud is used to represent gold brocade.
The props in front of them are partially painted with gold powder to create a three-dimensional effect. The folding screen in the back is painted with flowers and birds in sumi ink, enhancing the gorgeousness of the dolls.
It is interesting to note that Hoji’s signature is written as if he were the author of the screens in the painting.
Tanaka Hoji (1815-1885) was a painter who studied under Sakai Hoitsu, and is said to be one of the Four Heavenly Kings of his pupils. He also served the shogunate and remained active until the Meiji period.
