This work depicts parent and child mise gnawing on a royal ferm. The little paws gripping the stem of the plant firmly are very cute.
The curves of the mouse’s tail and the plant create a pleasant rhythm in the painting. The large margins give the painting a sophisticated atmosphere. While the well-watered brush expresses the freshness of the plants, the delicate hairs on the mouse’s body are drawn with delicate brush strokes. The artist’s high level of painting skill is evident in the way he uses the various expressions of sumi ink in different ways.
A mouse has long been known as a lucky painting subject for the prosperity of offspring. However, this work seems to express a sense of compassion and love for the small creature rather than such a wish of good fortune.
Shirai Naokata (date of birth and death unknown) was a painter of the Maruyama school active in Kyoto around Bunka era (1804-1818). He studied painting under Maruyama Okyo. He is known for his specialty of mouse paintings.
This work is a rare example of one of the few surviving examples of Naokata’s work.
