The contrast between the serene owl and the joyful little birds is very unique.
If you look closely at the ends of the zigzag flexing branches, you will see that some of them are still in bud. These plum blossoms are probably just beginning to bloom. The patterns of the birds are colored in gentle tones, and the fur of them is expressed by fine brush strokes throughout the work. On the other hand, the owl, which is resting its wings without a care in the world, has a plump, round silhouette that gives it a distinctive presence. The beak and whiskers are also faithfully depicted.
The combination of plum blossoms and owls, both of which are good luck charms, and the lively small birds add to this gorgeous and festive painting.
Ishizato Toshu (unknown-1783) studied under Kano Gensen of the Surugadai Kano family and was an official painter of the Chikuzen Fukuoka domain. After his master’s death, he educated his master’s son, the child Kano Toshun. He was later appointed Hokyo.
