Ebisu, Daikoku, and Fukurokuju are gathered close together, peering into a scroll. On the scroll is a large Chinese character for “壽”. It is a very festive scroll. Ebisu and Daikoku are squinting at each other, looking happy and conversing. Fukurokuju seems to be intently reading the characters on the scroll. Their expressions and belongings are carefully depicted throughout the painting, but it is never cramped. The gentle ink and muted colors harmonize to create a warm atmosphere.

Hanabusa Itcho (1652-1724) was a painter who studied under Kano Yasunobu (1614-1685). He was exiled in 1698 and lived on Miyakejima Island. He was pardoned in 1709 and returned to Edo, where he took the name Itcho. He is also known for his activities as a haikai poet.
