Jurojin rides on an outstretched scroll, soaring through the air. It is an unusual composition. The joyful expression on Jurojin’s face makes us smile. The highlight is Ichicho’s brushwork. While he drew Jurojin’s beard with thin and soft lines, his brush strokes on Jurojin’s robe are vigorous and powerful. The fine coloring on Jurojin’s skin, robe, fan, and other parts of the work is also wonderful.
Hanabusa Itcho(1652-1724) was a painter who studied under Kano Yasunobu (1614-1685). He was exiled in 1698 and lived on Miyakejima Island. He was pardoned in 1709 and returned to Edo,where he took the name Hokusodo-ou Itcho. He is also known for his activities as a haikai poet.
