Xiwangmu is a hermit who lives in the legendary Kunlun Mountains in the west and has a peach tree that bears fruit once every 3,000 years. It is said that if one eats the fruit, he or she will have a long life. In this painting, Xiwangmu is leaning against a rock on the right side of the screen, and a lady attendant is offering peaches to her. The artist’s high skill is evident in the noble, hermit-like expression on Seiohbo’s face and the translucent fan. The waka poem in praise of the painting reads, “Hana momo nama no hyakunen no koheri wo mitahikasanuru kara mieru.”
Genki (1747-1797) was a painter active in Kyoto in the mid-Edo period. At the time, he was famous as a first-rate painter along with Ito Jakuchu and Ike Taiga. He studied painting under Maruyama Okyo, and his works follow the style of Okyo. The “愛親” of the admirer is thought to be Naruchika Nakayama (1741-1814), a court noble of the mid-to-late Edo period.
