A maple tree stands quietly in the moonlight. The shading of the sumi ink and the “tarashikomi” technique skillfully depict the underside of the leaf and the intensity of the light shining on it.The gold mud used on the veins of the leaves adds an accent to the ink-only color of the painting. The entire background is painted in very light sumi ink, and the light of the full moon is expressed by the remaining sumi ink.
This work was painted in the style of Hoitsu Sakai’s “Maple Tree under the moonlight” (collection of Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art).
Sakai Doitsu (1845-1913), the painter of this work, left many stylish and decorative works in the tradition of the Rimpa school. He is also known for his efforts to popularize Rimpa paintings during the late Edo and Meiji periods, including the “Hoitsu Calligraphy and Painting Memorial Exhibition” held on the 50th anniversary of Hoitsu’s death. This work shows his self-consciousness as an heir to the Rimpa school.
