The right side of the scroll depicts the seven flowers of autumn, named after the poem “萩の花 尾花葛花 なでしこが花 をみなへし また藤袴 朝顔が花(Hagi no hana obana kuzubana nadeshiko ga hana wominaeshi mata fujibakama asagao ga hana)” by Yamanoue no Okura, which is included in the Manyoshu. The highlight is the “tarashikomi” technique used for the leaves. Lovely insects are also depicted on the leaves of silver grass.
The left side of the painting shows the striking contrast between the red of the maple leaves and the blue of the water. As is typical of Rimpa school painters, the water currents are depicted in gold paint. The depiction of the maple trunks and Dopo is modest, and the work as a whole is elegant.

Nozaki Shinichi (1821-1899) was the eldest son of Ishigaki Hoshin (1791-1856), a student of Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1828). Several of his works are known, including “Hoitsu Shonin” (Portrait of Hoitsu). His style is graceful and lovely, and he is regarded as a successor of the Edo Rimpa school from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period.
