A line of waterfalls cascades down a steep mountain face.
The poet Li Bai of the Sheng Tang Dynasty in China is the one who sits on the rocky outcrop and gazes at the waterfall.
He visited the Lushan Falls during his travels and was so impressed by the magnificent sight that he composed the following poem titled “望廬山瀑布”(Watching at the Lushan Falls).

日照香炉生紫煙
遥看瀑布掛長川
飛流直下三千尺
疑是銀河落九天

The sun shines on the incense burner and produces purple smoke.
I see the waterfalls hanging over the Chogawa River from afar.
The waterfalls are 3,000 feet below the current.
I wonder if the waterfall fall from the galaxy.

This poem was the basis for many of paintings, which depict Li Bai gazing at the waterfalls while writing poetry.

The waterfalls in this work are painted using the “Sotoguma” technique, in which the ground color of the paper is used and ink is applied around the object to make it stand out in white.
This technique skillfully expresses the mysterious brilliance of the Lushan Falls, which Li Bai described as “疑是銀河九天落” (like a galaxy falling from the heavens).
