With a light and elegant touch, the artist depicts persimmons in abundance. The artist is Suzuki Kiitsu (1796-1858), a representative painter of the Edo Rimpa school.
The soft, light colors of the painting make the crimson of the ripe persimmon in the center of the painting look particularly attractive. The artist used a paint with a high moisture content throughout the painting, and employed a variety of techniques, such as “tsuketate” and “tarashikomi”. Despite the small number of strokes, the artist accurately captured the shapes of the branches, leaves, and fruits, and rendered them beautifully.
The poem is a praise by Nakai Tōdo (1758-1821), a late Edo period poet, who described the ripe persimmons on the low-hanging branches as shining like jade.
The painting period of Kiitsu can be divided into three main periods, based on the various calligraphic styles of his signatures and the various types of seals. This work is considered to be from the first period when he was working with his master Hoitsu, because of the cursive script of the signature and the use of the seal “Sekiun” (錫雲). It is an excellent example of young Kiichi’s fresh sense of style.
