The painting depicts dancers swirling around a band playing flutes and drums, and people holding branches decorated with red, blue, white, and yellow paper strips.
All wear straw hats uniformly, and the dancers hold instruments resembling “binzasara” with red and white decorative cords. Looking more closely, some dancers even wear lion masks…

The exact details of the festival depicted here remain unclear, but the gentle, joyful expressions of the participants reveal it was a cherished local tradition. It is quite charming to gaze at this work as if you were part of the festival, imagining the lively sounds of the festival music filling the air.

Suzuki Kiitsu (1795–1858) was one of the leading painters of the Edo-period Rinpa school. A disciple of Sakai Hōitsu (1761–1829), he is known as Hōitsu’s de facto successor. Interest in Kiitsu has grown in recent years, evidenced by major retrospective exhibitions, and he is increasingly recognized as a Rinpa master alongside Sōtatsu, Kōrin, and Hōitsu.
Based on the signature “菁々其一,” this work is believed to have been created after 1844, when his painting style had reached maturity.
