The seven gods of good fortune and cranes are gathered in a circle. Daikoku, Hotei, and Jurojin have open mouths, and the seven appear to be chatting and laughing. The crane is humorously crying to the heavens.
The soft yet sharp lines used throughout the work are beautiful in every way. While the work is based on light colors, high-color pigments are used in some parts, resulting in a crisp and clear work.
Suzuki Kiitsu(1795-1858) is one of the leading painters of the Edo Rimpa school. A disciple of Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1829), he is known as a substantial successor. In recent years, he has been the focus of increasing attention, with major retrospective exhibitions being held, and he is now recognized as a painter of the Rimpa school along with Sotatsu, Korin, and Hoitsu.
This work, with the inscription “菁々其一,” was produced around 1844, and is considered to be from the period of maturity of his painting style.
