A family of cranes perched on a single pine tree is depicted. The composition is unusual in that the nest and baby cranes are placed in the center of the image. The parents look at each other, creating a warm atmosphere.
The cranes’ fur is drawn with very delicate lines, indicating that they were painstakingly created. Two different colors of green are used for the pine tree leaves, creating a three-dimensional effect. The exquisite coloring of the pine tree trunks is also elegant.
Suzuki Kiitsu (1795-1858) was one of the leading painters of the Edo Rimpa school. A disciple of Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1829), he is known as a substantial successor. In recent years, he has been the focus of increasing attention, with major retrospective exhibitions being held, and he is becoming recognized as a painter of the Rimpa school along with Sotatsu, Korin, and Hoitsu.
This work, with the inscription “噲々其一,” was produced after the first year of the Koka Era (1833) and is considered to be from the period of the peak of his painting career.
