Two chrysanthemums, one yellow and the other white, are depicted. The voluminous chrysanthemums are bordered by soft brush strokes and colored in gentle tones. The two chrysanthemums are represented not only by the petals, but also by the leaves and stems, each in a different color.
The highlight is the “tarashikomi” technique used for the leaves. This technique gives the chrysanthemum leaves an exquisite nuance. The greenish-blue color used here and there, and the gold mud on the veins of the leaves are also effective. This work is both calm and gorgeous.
Suzuki Kiitsu (1795-1858) was one of the leading painters of the Edo Rimpa school. A disciple of Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1829), he is known as a substantial successor.
In recent years, he has been the focus of increasing attention, with major retrospective exhibitions being held, and he is becoming recognized as a painter of the Rimpa school along with Sotatsu, Korin, and Hoitsu.
This work, with the inscription “菁々其一,” was produced after 1844 and is considered to be from the period when his painting style was at its peak of maturity.
