This painting depicts “Kan’ei Hina”, a type of sitting doll manufactured during the Kan’ei period.
This doll is characterized by the sokutai (a ceremonial kimono sash) and classically elegant facial features.
The most notable feature of this work is the delicate and beautifully painted cover.
Around the circular shape of the paper, the “pine arabesque” pattern, which combines arabesques and pine trees, radiates out.
A single weeping cherry branch hangs from the upper left of the screen.
It passes behind the part of the main paper on which the hina dolls are painted, and part of it also hangs down in front of the paper, creating a mysterious pictorial space with depth.
Looking at the cherry branches, we see a mixture of pretty white petals and peach-colored buds waiting for the blooming season.
The season is probably early spring.
The swallow, depicted in the lower left corner of the painting, has been a familiar bird that heralds the arrival of spring since it flies to Japan in early March.
The blue ocean waves in gofun are also very beautiful, and Shuitsu’s taste shines through in this decorative and chic painting.
