A young pine tree with strong branches. Behind it, the soft morning sun peeks out, and three cranes fly overhead. The artist is Komai Genki (1747-1797), a painter of the Maruyama School in the mid-Edo period.

The combination of the pine tree and cranes is called “Shokakuchoshun,” an auspicious painting title, and is meant to celebrate the couple’s longevity and immortality. Focusing on the representation of the pine tree, the artist skillfully depicted the different textures of the tree, such as the rugged, cracked bark and needle-sharp leaves. The strong branches of the pine trees and the soft colors used throughout the painting are in pleasant harmony, creating a picture filled with a calm vitality.

Genki is known as a disciple of Maruyama Okyo. His ability was so great that there is a rumor that “some of the works from Okyo’s later years include Genki’s handwritings. This work, which is a good example of Okyo’s plain and graceful style, shows the solid painting skills of Genki, who supported his master’s work as his right-hand man.

He studied painting under Maruyama Okyo, and was admired alongside Nagasawa Rōsetsu as one of the two great masters of Okyo’s school. He is known for his delicate and graceful paintings of Chinese beauties, which are a perfect inheritance of Okyo’s painting style.
