This is Ise no Taifu holding a yaezakura cherry tree. This image immediately reminds me of the poem “Inishie no Nara no miyako no yaezakura kefu kokonoe ni nioinuru kana,” which was included in the Hyakunin Isshu, a Japanese anthology of 100 poems. The cherry blossoms depicted here are also in full bloom, and their fragrance seems to fill the painting.
Ise no Taifu’s face is characterized by the smooth bridge of his nose and her red lips. Her robe is of heavy colors and shows a solemn atmosphere. The various patterns are all painted precisely and without skipping a beat. The work is delicately finished with careful brushwork, as was typical of Genki.
Genki (1747-1797) was a painter active in Kyoto in the mid-Edo period. At that time, he was famous as a first-class painter along with Ito Jakuchu and Ike Taiga. He studied painting under Maruyama Okyo, and his works follow the style of Okyo. This work will be exhibited in the special exhibition “Futsu no Keifu” at the Fuchu Art Museum in 2021.
